Others many disagree, but when people take the time to deconstruct a piece and show , step by step, the thought process and why you made those choices (even if it's i plugged this box into that and pressed a couple buttons until I found a cool sound, or I asked ai to tell me how to make it sound better) I absolutely adore it. It helps me make music, and I go on a journey with the artist. But thats a lot of work, especially AFTER making the piece itself). It shows me the thought and care that went into it (again, even if it's i pressed some buttons. After all, just turning it on and pressing buttons is the essence distilled of making music).

I have a video of a friend playing a simple tune on their piano. The video shows the right hand movement and I can play that part myself, but the left hand is off shot. How can I work out the chords being played? Is there a service for that?

I'm sure there may well be a techie solution these days but in essence, the melody (or tune) you hear will fit with certain chords and for me, it's just trial and error, listening for what sounds 'right' (to my western musical sensibilities) as I play the tune and try out root notes, then more complete chords.
ChatGPT tells me:
Band-in-a-Box can do this. You record your melody from a MIDI keyboard, then its Reharmonist suggests a chord progression in your chosen style, showing chord names such as C, Am, F and G. pgmusic.com

Lately I've been worrying about the memories we, as a society, have lost and are losing. Seems to me as I plough on into my 50s that younger generations have very little understanding of how their world has come about - hugely important historical cultural milestones are not taught or discussed. History is not studied, its lessons lie ignored and trampled on the side of the road as society forges on regardless at full speed. It's not even just the big stuff like colonial history, the industrial revolution or the cold war, but also topics raised in classic movies, music and literature. How many know about Woodstock and what it meant? Punk? Who was Rod Stirling? I know there are projects dedicated to preserving this stuff but they are niche and only a minority are interested in them. The enshittification of the internet and our over-reliance on digital media seems to be speeding up this loss of knowledge and the rise of fascism around the world scares me. We are losing the tools and lessons of our predecessors to fight it - or even see it for what it is. I guess my question is does anyone else feel the same, and how do we combat this loss? Also any words of comfort or pointers to events, organisations or people that prove there is still hope would be very much appreciated.

There is always hope, the generations coming up behind us hold that hope. It is up to us the share what we can when we can without being preachy. My daughter and her friends (all mid twenties) had a big party at our house and the evening ended with us all talking and sharing our fears and observations. They I not so different, they just need to realise we have all been there and felt that.

They are expensive!
If you have the money burning a hole in your pocket and the alternative would be to buy a fast car, a buy-to-let property, or a politician then you should definitely buy all the serge and buchla that you can afford!
If however it would be a stretch then might I suggest that the makenoise “easel” or tip top modules would get you most of the way there? For way less.
Maybe you could convince Robin to lobby to add buchla to the synth picnic lending Library

I was let go from a job I loved last year. I found relief, happiness, and joy in my plushie friends. Kind, fuzzy friends, far away from all the corporate lies and nastiness. I want to make an ambient electronic album for them. Full of peace, kindness, softness, and happiness. I have a few pieces ready. Can anyone relate? Would you enjoy listening to something like that? To bring closure to an awful time, and to make people happy.

I have too mc\uch going on. I want 10 lifetimes to get to experience all of these interwesting rabbit holes and deep dives. I'm a musician, an artist, a technologist/engineer, a photographer but due to the breath a master of none -- a generalist to a fault. I've been told to "FOCUS" before. I know about the 10,000 hours to mastery 'thing.' My question goes out to fellow creatives who've found their way out of a similar situation to a simpler, more satisfying approach to creativity that doesn't feel like hundreds of unfinished projects, or force you to give up things that you love, or still want to explore. How did YOU do it? What works (for you)? What doesn't? Pleasse share your hard-won wisdom with a creative soul drowning in backlog.

Hi Supertwang, Ok not sure if this will help. Focus is not always the answer in large scale. This is how I have started turning around my overload. Perhaps it will help. I pick at least one of my pieces of gears a day and spend some time on it. I pick at random and at first 15 mins was I I could do before on to the next gleem in my eye. As I learned a bit more on each I was able to give more time. I also discovered the each daily gem was building and increasing my skills and that evil word focus. My modular instructor has drilled in to her students. Your are not behind and right where you need to be. I still have a long way to go but for the first time in 10+ years of collecting gear and training classes I am using more and more of m gear. I an now patching across everything, trying new things and having fun and started build tracks. Do repeat the quests as others may have ideas that may work better for you . - - Glenn

Ring modulation is an experiment in waveform frequencies. You have these two signals, where one modulates the pitch of the other to create what are called sideband frequencies. Essentially these are the sum and difference of the two signals - you add them together and take them away. Then, what you hear is only the sidebands - the original pitches are not present. The sum/difference sidebands won't be harmonically related and that's why we get this dissonant, clangy, metallic sort of crappy sound that some people like.
If you are struggling with it (join the club) try using very simple sine waves for both the carrier and modulator. Keep the carrier constant and slowly alter the modulator. The tones will be FM-like. For more complex results use a more complex modulator waveform, vary the pitch and amplitude.
There's no right answer with Ring Modulation, you kinda have to dial in what sounds interesting to you.

The best way to get away from folks is to go the backcountry route, for which you will need a backcountry pass. While most of these are long multi-day treks, you could do a quick in an out from Poboktan to the waterfalls campsite and back (total 22km round trip, do over 2 days, stay at waterfall) or at the other end of the trail to boulder creek (similar distance)
most people look for circular walks but out and back gives you two different vistas.
My experience of the western US and Canadian parks is that after 1/2 hour on the backcountry trails you will have it to yourself.
Exercise caution and prudence! You will be relying on your own resources.
Take a good camera for the stars and a field recorder for the birds and bears.
